Why I’m not a fan of NATURE REPUBLIC – Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera 92% Gel

Having a dry skin, is something I’ve struggled with all my life. I tried a lot to deal with the problem: drank a lot of water, changed my diet, and tried a lot of moisturizing body lotions. I think the last one helped me the most. Several body lotions did a good job of reducing dryness. So when I read several rave reviews about Nature Republic’s Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera 92% gel, I couldn’t wait to try it.

I already was a fan of Aloe vera. It’s often incorporated in moisturizing body lotions. Besides I use it for sunburns. One day I was on holiday in Tel Aviv, and we were going to the beach. The beach sand was extremely hot, so I didn’t take off my flip flops. Somehow the heat managed to reach my soles of the feet. At the end of the day, my soles burned, and I couldn’t walk back to the hostel. Thank God, I had some Aloe vera gel. I rubbed my feet in it, and after a couple of hours my feet were completely healed.

With this memory in mind, I bought the Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera 92% gel of Nature Republic.

What does it promise?

“This Soothing Gel is infused with 92% Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract which helps effectively soothe skin to moisturize with its refreshing application and quick absorption without stickiness. The aloe vera is produced in California and can be used on face, arms, legs, hair and etc.

– A multi-functional soothing gel made from California aloe vera that gently hydrates your face, arms, legs and hair.
– Contains 92% aloe vera extract, which is rapidly absorbed by skin for soothing and moisturizing effects and a refreshing sensation.”

It sounded very convincing, and after I received my package, I tried it right away.

The refreshing gel

The gel smells fresh and had a strong Aloe vera scent. The structure is also really nice, kind of watery, but non sticky. When it touches my skin, it absorbs immediately, and leaves my skin soft and hydrated.

But then…

The soft and moisturizing feeling didn’t last long. Within an hour, my skin looked dry again, and didn’t feel soft anymore. So I put more on it, and repeated it a few times during the day.

After a week of use, my skin looked extremely dry. It turned white and flaky. I panicked a bit. When I quickly tried to apply the gel, I realized that this could be the roots of evil. I stopped using it, and after a couple of days my skin became less dry. But it was still drier than before, so I had to use a thick moisturizing body lotion to turn it back to normal -too bad.

Nature Republic’s Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera 92% gel contains alcohol!

After this disaster, I read the ingredient list of this product. The first ingredient is Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (92%). The second one is…. alcohol. The ingredients must be listed in descending order of weight. That means that after Aloe leaf extract, alcohol is the second major ingredient!!!

Alcohol removes moisture from the skin, causing skin dryness. Especially if you have an Asian skin, you need to be extremely careful with alcohol. Asian skin is more sensitive to harsh ingredients, like alcohol. Read more about the Asian skin in: The 7 Asian skin secrets. The alcohol in it made my skin really dry.

It’s ironic that a product advertising its moisturizing qualities, contains alcohol. After this discovery, I stopped using it. Very unfortunate, as it’s a large pot (300 ml). I hope I can use it for other things, but no idea for what. Because it didn’t do what it promises -it just made it worse…
