How to take extra care of your skin when wearing a face mask

I never imagined that this would be the year that I would finally wear a face mask. Don’t get me wrong, wearing a face mask was on my list since the age of five. At the time, I was watching the news with my mom, and an item about Hong Kong came by. They filmed city life, and I saw several people walking around while wearing a face mask.

“Mom, are they all doctors?”, I asked.
“No, I think not.”
“But why are they wearing face masks?”
“I don’t know.”

From that moment on, I was fascinated. I wanted to wear a face mask too. Luckily a dentist came to school, a few weeks later. He had a face mask with him, and some other dentist supplies. I was hoping he would share his face mask with me, so I finally had my face mask and would live happily ever after. But he didn’t.

Flash forward to 2020, where Covid-19 enters Europe and face masks are no longer just for doctors (or Asians). Now I’m completely used to wearing one. But I must confess, masks can be hard for the skin. It always gives me extremely dry lips. And it can also cause problems like acne, dryness, itchiness and irritation. So it’s not surprising that you have to take extra care of your skin, when you’re wearing a mask. I’ll tell you how.

1. don’t forget to moisturize

A good skincare routine can prevent skin problems. Don’t forget to moisturize, because a face mask makes your skin dryer. A moisturizer adds a protective layer that can prevent dryness. Use it before and after wearing a mask.

Use a moisturizer that suits your skin, so you can get the best out of it.
– Do you have an oily skin? Use a gel moisturizer.
– Do you have a normal or combination skin? Use a lotion.
– Do you have a dry skin? Use a cream.

Suffer from skin irritation? Don’t use salicylic acid, it can make the irritation worse.

2. protect your lips with lip balm

You may have noticed, that you get dry lips faster when you’re wearing a mask -oh, yeah. Therefor use a lip balm to protect them. Use it 3 times a day: after you skincare routine, before you put your mask on, and before you get into bed.

3. wear the right mask

A good face mask has a snug fit across your nose, under your kin, and on the sides. Besides preventing to spread the virus, it’s important that you wear the right face mask. A face mask that fits properly prevents skin problems. If your mask doesn’t fit right, you’ll touch it more often, transferring germs to your mask and face, which causes acne.

Also take a good look to the fabric. Where is your mask made of? Several fabrics can irritate your skin and cause breakouts, like nylon, rayon and polyester.

And wear a clean mask every time. Your mask collects oils and dead skin cells inside. This can cause acne. So if you’re wearing a cloth mask, wash it after using it. Do you wear a disposable mask? Replace it after 4 hours.
