Toner Time

My first skincare routine was from Clinique. I think I was about 17 years old when I got a trial pack from a high-end drugstore. I fell in love immediately. I enjoyed using the 3-step skincare routine and above all, I saw results quite quickly.

A few weeks later I received a full package from my mother and my daily skincare routine started. The nicest part was the toner. I put a lotion on a cotton pad and wiped my face with it. The cotton pad slowly turned brown from the dirt of my face, very satisfying.

Now, years later, the toner is still my favorite part of my skincare routine. I don’t use products of Clinique anymore, but I still have some K-beauty toners in my cabinet. But what is a face toner exactly and why should you use it?

A face toner, or toner, is a water-based liquid that contains skin soothing ingredients, like aloe vera, peppermint or eucalyptus. There are different toners that suit your skin type. A toner refreshes your skin, doesn’t irritate, and ensures that is doesn’t lose moisture. It also prepares your skin for moisturizing products (which you use after the toner).

What does a face toner do?

A toner is the next step you use after cleansing. It removes the last traces of dirt, excess oil, makeup leftovers and impurities that are still in your pores. When used daily in your skincare routine, it has a positive effect on your skin. It smoothes your skin, restores the pH-level and improves the skin tone.

How do you use a face toner?

The toner is the second step in your skincare routine. Soak a cotton pad with toner and swipe it over your face, neck and chest.

Use it twice a day. But if you have dry or irritated skin, it’s better to use it once a day or every other day. That’s because toners have powerful ingredients.

Which toner to use:

There are different toners for different skin types:

  • Does your skin need hydration? Use a toner with vitamin E or rosewater.
  • Is your skin irritated? Use a toner with Aloe vera or chamomile.
  • Do you have an oil skin/ acne? Use a toner with tea tree oil.
  • Do you have an aging skin? Use a toner containing plant stem cells.
