5 reasons to use facial sunscreen

When I was a kid, I had a sun allergy. When I got too much sun, my face swelled and I got red patches. So during summer, I had to rub my face with a medical sunscreen. That was quite strange in the Netherlands. I have dark skin color, so people assumed I didn’t need sunscreen. They also thought that the sun was nice for my brown skin.

Actually not.

My sun allergy was such a problem that I couldn’t live without my medical sunscreen for a moment. Sometimes my mother forgot to rub my face and then, at the end of the day, I had a puffy red head. The worst thing was: the medical sunscreen I used, was actually created for people with red hair and a very light skin color. I suspect that I inherited the allergy from an European ancestor.

Luckily I got over the sun allergy. Yet my skin remains sensitive. That’s why I always use sunscreen on my face, even in winter. Do you already use sunscreen in your skincare routine? Let me give you at least 5 reasons why you should use it.

The 5 benefits of facial sunscreen:

1. It protects your skin from UV Rays

UV rays are harmful and increased the risk of sun damage. When you’re wearing a sunscreen, the UV rays are blocked. This reduces the changes of skin disorders.

2. It reduces the risk of cancer

Sunscreen reduces the risk of various skin cancers. But this has only an effect if you use sunscreen daily.

3. It keeps your skin tone even

Sunscreen on your face will keep your skin tone even. An uneven skin tone is the cause of sun damage. Sunscreen prevents this problem.

4. It makes your skin age less quickly

When you often get sunlight on your skin, it worsens the appearance of lines and wrinkles. A sunscreen counteracts the effects of early skin aging.

5. It keeps your skin healthy

A sunscreen protects essential proteins in your skin, like keratin. These proteins keep your skin smooth and healthy.

Facial sunscreen products

All these benefits only apply if you use sunscreen every day, so even in winter. Here are some products you can use in your skincare routine. Use a sunscreen once a day in the last step of your skincare regime.
