My skin can sometimes be very sensitive to skin care products. That became painfully clear when I once won a free skin care treatment from a beautician.
I don’t remember what the treatment was but she took pictures of my skin, analyzed it and based on the results a treatment was done. Normally this treatment was very expensive, around 120 euros ($144.10), but I was glad it was all for free now. Especially because I had a wedding that evening. And I was looking forward to appear there with a glowing skin.
After she cleansed my skin, she did a peeling. The peeling had to sit for 5 minutes and could tingle a bit, she said.
The peeling was barely on my skin when it started to tingle violently. Or should I say: burning. I didn’t want to be light sensitive so I didn’t say anything at first. But then my face seemed to burn off and tears sprang to my eyes. “It hurts”, I said sadly.
The beautician immediately turned around, yelled that my face looked all red and immediately took the peeling off. Then she tried to soothe my skin, which worked pretty well but not quite. It kept tingling and remained red.
After the treatment the owner of the salon came to look at my skin. She said it looked very healthy, but I think she only said that to make me feel good. The skin of my face was red like a tomato. And the worst thing was that it stayed red for the rest of the day. Yes, even at the wedding…
Luckily my skin has never reacted so violently to skin care products again. But it can still react very sensitive with some skin care products. It tingles a bit or it becomes slightly red. So I have to be very careful when I select (new) products.
So if you have a sensitive skin like me, I share you a skin care routine that is suitable for your skin.
What is a sensitive skin?
Your skin protects you against harmful substances and external influences. A sensitive skin occurs when your skin barrier is weakened or disturbed. This makes your skin easy irrated.
Because of this the skin reacts to external influences, such as weather conditions, skin care products and makeup. You can notice that from the following symptoms:
- An tingling or burning sensation
- Red spots
- Skin flakes or chaps
- Skin rash or inflammation
- A thin skin texture
5 step Skin care routine for a sensitive skin
If you have sensitive skin, it’s important to choose skin care products that protect your skin and don’t irritate it unnecessary.
Here are some general tips for sensitive skin:
- Don’t use soap on your face or cleansers that remove grease.
- Always use a moisturizer and a sunscreen.
- Choose skin care products that doesn’t contain alcohol, synthetic colors or perfume.
- And don’t use skin care products that are past their expiration date.
Choose products for your skin care routine that are chemical-free and made with gentle formulas.
Step 1: A gently (Double) cleansing
Start to cleanse your skin with a gentle oil cleanser. Then cleanse your skin for a second time with a facial cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin’s natural oils.
It’s not necessary to double cleanse your skin. My skin always feels sensitive after I double cleanse it. So I don’t double cleanse it in the morning. Just see what feels good for your skin when deciding whether to use a double cleanser or not.
Step 2: An alcohol-free toner
Use a toner after cleansing. Check the ingredient list first when you look for a toner. Choose a toner that is alcohol-free and doesn’t contain harsh ingredients, such as fragrances or synthetic colors.
Step 3: A serum for the sensitive skin
Choose a serum that is suitable for the sensitive skin. The serum repairs the skin barrier and hydrates and soothes the skin at same time. And if you suffer from redness, use a serum that treats redness as well!
Step 4: Mosturize
A moisturizer helps to strengthen and repair the sensitive skin. Use a moisturizer that protects your skin without causing any irritations. Look at the ingredient list and possibly do patch test before applying the moisturizer all over your face.
Step 5: Protect with a sunscreen
It’s very important to protect your sensitive skin from the sun. Try to find a light-weight sunscreen that absorbs easily and won’t leave a white cast on your skin.
