I follow a guy for a couple of years on Instagram. He has his own clothing line, inspired by his Indonesian roots. I’ve never bought anything from him, but I love seeing his designs.
A couple of days ago he posted something different. He posted an image, explaining why turmeric is so great for the Indo skin. I was quite surprised because of his change of subject.
I brought up this topic during my Indonesian language lesson. ‘Oh, I used to have to rub myself with turmeric’, my Indonesian teacher said. And continued that it turned her yellow and we all had to laugh.
I only know turmeric as a common (yellow!) ingredient for Indonesian food and I have never thought about it as a skin care ingredient. But it’s really great for your skin and I’ll tell you why.
What is turmeric?
Turmeric is originally from India. It’s a spice and it comes from the plant Curcuma longa. The spice is used to add flavor and color to the food.
Turmeric has been used in Indian Ayurveda for thousands of years as a medicine and skin care. Although Western scientists are skeptical, turmeric is considered as a powerful medicine for several diseases and as great ingredient for skin care.
The benefits of turmeric for your skin
When you add turmeric on your meal, it has a natural anti-inflammatory effect on your body. But when you add it to your skin care, it has te following benefits:
- Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it prevents acne.
- It reduces pigmentation.
- It improves the elasticity of your skin.
- It improves irritated skin and reduces redness.
- It neutralizes free radicals and therefore it reduces signs of skin aging.
To be honest, I never thought that turmeric has so much benefits for your skin. I always have it in my kitchen, so I’m going to rub it on my skin one day, instead of cooking with it. Let’s give it a try!
