Do Silicones Clog Your Pores?

I followed a popular Dutch beauty blogger for a while. One day she wrote that she renounced silicones in products because it gave her pimples.

And that became quite a hype! Suddenly all her followers (including me) started banning products that contain silicone.

I used a great primer at the time, but when I found out it had silicone in it, it disappeared in the trash. Just like my shampoo, conditioner and hair serum.

I must confess that silicone never gave me pimples, but the popular beauty blogger said so, so it must be true. Okay I followed a lot of advice from her, which turned out not to work for me in the end, but still.

Recently I tracked her down and she still didn’t want any silicone in her products. So I wondered: do you really get pimples from silicones? I have the answer for you.

What are silicones?

Silicones are synthetics. They are often heat resistant and rubbery. They are used, amon other things, as glue, lubricant, sealant and as raw material for kitchen utensils.

Silicones have liquid properties. This makes them easy to spread. That’s why they are often used in cosmetic products, such as skin care and hair care. They ensure that your shampoos and creams can be evenly distributed.

The most common forms of silicone are cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane.

Because silicones have liquid properties, they are often added to skin care products. Silicones feel soft on the skin and protects the skin against fluid loss.

But they are also used in wound healing and making scars less visible.

But do silicones cause pimples?

What I’ve often heard is that silicones form a layer on your skin, which prevents your skin from breathing. Also they would clog your pores. Because of this you would get pimples from silicones.

Silicones consist of large molecules with a lot of space between them. This space allows your skin to breathe.

In addition, it’s not possible for silicones to penetrate into pores. After you spread the silicones on your face, you may feel like you’ve put a layer on your skin. But the structure of silicones changes so quickly that they can’t even reach your pores.

So no, silicones don’t clog your pores and therefore don’t cause pimples!
